Summary

An ally is a person who actively and intentionally seeks to bring about change by fostering inclusion, social justice and human rights. Allies constantly learn, question and re-evaluate the space they occupy. Allies are willing to take risks and put themselves on the line to shoulder certain kinds of harm that show up in spaces that are not inclusive or equitable. Allies have the power to bring about change. You are not an ally unless others believe you qualify.

In this webinar, a social scientist and a diversity and equity coach address why acting with intention is essential to being an ally. “Allyship is a lifelong process that we engage in to develop relationships with others, to hold ourselves accountable, to continue to learn and grow, to critically self-reflect and to maintain consistency in those relationships that we have with folks who are marginalized in ways that are different than ourselves,” said Heather Metcalf, a social scientist with Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN), a non-profit that mobilizes research to help further the intersection of gender equity in STEM environments, particularly engineering.
